Peel back the layers of lower Manhattan’s past on a tour of world famous and lesser-known monuments and architecture that will reshape your concept of downtown New York.  Our tour begins at the African Burial Ground National Monument, a site rediscovered in the 1990s, where thousands of enslaved and free Africans were buried in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.  We will discuss the infamous Tweed Courthouse and New York by Gehry before enjoying the summer’s new contemporary art installation at City Hall Park.  The tour will include outdoor views of the Woolworth Building that was dubbed The Cathedral of Commerce, historic 1766 St. Paul’s Chapel, and Santiago Calatrava’s controversial World Trade Center Transportation Hub, on our way past one of the most discussed and visited memorials of recent history, the 9/11 Memorial.  The tour will end at the Irish Hunger Memorial, a lush hillside and cottage set among Battery Park City skyscrapers that draws attention to world hunger.  This tour takes place almost entirely outdoors so please dress for the weather and for walking.  Meeting spot and information about food, beverages, and restrooms will be provided upon registration.
