Ludwig van Beethoven’s string quartets are a musical diary of his ever-changing, ever-evolving compositional technique and expressive priorities.  They also mirror his tumultuous inner life and the turbulent European world in which Beethoven lived.  Beethoven’s string quartets lie at the very center of the concert repertoire and remain the single most varied and influential set of quartets composed in the nineteenth century.  This semester’s examination will focus on the intellectual and creative development of the composer’s later works.  New and returning students are welcome.
