In an open studio, each person creates his or her own unique project in any style: realism, abstraction, impressionism or anything in between.  Gentle guidance and support will be provided, as needed, from an artist who has taught watercolors and won awards in pastels, acrylics,  and oils.  The relaxed atmosphere will foster creativity and encourage freedom of experimentation.  You can focus on personal expression and development and can use any medium you like (acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolor), but you will need to bring you own supplies.  Supply lists are available upon request.

Explore the realm of drawing using pencil, charcoal, ink, pastel, and oil pastel.  Each class will introduce a medium and its unique characteristics.  Demonstrations will provide instruction in various techniques before students compose their own piece, based on the arranged still-life.  Students new to drawing will be directed through these projects and experienced students will build on their creative capabilities.  One-on-one guidance will be provided by the instructor.  By the end of the class, students will have developed their drawing skills, strengthened their artistic perception, and deepened their personal drawing style.  Students are asked to bring a sketchbook 9”x12” or larger.  Basic materials will be provided.

This class will review the elements and principles of art and exercise them through drawing.  Emphasis will be on developing skills such as perspective and rendering value, using cross-hatching.  Color theory and use of color in a composition will be studied.  Students new to drawing will be directed through these projects and experienced students will build on their creative capabilities.  Students are asked to bring a sketchbook, 9” x 12” or larger.  Basic materials will be provided.

Learn how to paint a variety of luminous and layered watercolor subjects.  This class will emphasize waterscapes, cityscapes, landscapes and "es"capes.  We will concentrate on clouds, skies, forests, foliage perspective and all sorts of water vistas.  Color mixing, composition, drawing and the use of values will be emphasized.  Practice, class discussion, and critiques will help students develop an understanding of the principles of design necessary to create beautiful paintings.  Friendly but constructive class critiques will help students develop their own personal style.  The use of photo resources is encouraged.  Materials list available online under course description.  This class is intended for students who have experience with the medium.

Collage Art

Create a series of unique and meaningful artworks using collage techniques.  Demonstrations will include the use of patterned and painted  papers, text, maps, and photographs, combined with various mediums to create texture and relief.  Let your creativity soar as we combine collage with charcoal, watercolor pencil, and other painting and drawing media.  We will be inspired by the work of prominent collage artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Nancy Spero, Elliott Hundley and Mark Bradford.
